Ziad Abillama
Les Erections Irreductibles Mixed Media ,Various dimensions
Architectural and abstract, Ziad Abillama’s large scale sculptures are minimalist in appearance, but maximalist in their message. He pushes the limits of art beyond the scope of representation and aesthetics, and ventures into the philosophical world.

Fine Equilibrium
The structures are geometric and clean with simple forms and no embellishments. Built with industrial precision and symmetry, the sculptures fuse sharp, smooth edges and round, curvy rubber tires that offset the angular base. An exception stands in their midst, exemplified by a deflated tire and missing fragments. These complimentary aspects allow the pieces to confront each other, at the same time creating balance. They are also codependent. While the blocky base serves as an allegory of the physical realm and the body, the ring-shaped tires represent the spirit or ‘essence’ which allows for the animation and completion of the Self or ‘being’.

Symbiotic Links
Volumes and proportions are key in giving the sculptures considerable height and a presence that can be purposely intimidating. They are a reference to the inflated and aggrandized sense of superiority among powerful forces in the world. The odd one out stands as a reminder of the eventual and irrefutable end of all things, and in this case, the rise and fall of the revolution. The contrasts presented in the physical shape of the structures also allude to the contradicting forces that play out in the real world, shaping modern political, societal, economic and even personal factors. These include gender, class and collective identity. These dichotomies reappear in Abillama’s works, and propel many of his thoughts and inspirations. As a whole, the tall structures cheekily titled ‘irreducible erections’ metaphorically refer to the incessant parading (and misuse) of power within the hands of the inept.
