‘Inside my Broken Forest’ stands as an evocative masterpiece, a post-apocalyptic tableau woven from the intricate threads of red and black, humor and drama, anger and contemplation. The gallery itself transforms into a surreal sanctum, a forest of raw emotions breathed to life through the alchemy of burnt branches, natural color pigments, and sculptures cast in both resin and bronze.
In the words of the winning artist, this is a cyclical narrative. A few days preceding the 2019 revolution, Mount Lebanon’s verdant woods succumbed to an infernal blaze, reducing once-thriving trees to ash and enshrouding the landscape in an abyssal shroud. Within this tapestry of destruction and reconstruction, the exhibition emerges as poignant vessels. A dominant crimson backdrop, akin to the aftermath of conflagration, embodies the symbol of chaos and dissolution. In contrast, stark black branches stretch forth, their anguished lines evoking a profound melancholy, and in the foreground, the artist’s emblematic canine motif—embodying loyalty and companionship—takes a poignant stance, casting a haunting specter of absence.
Yet, the burnt branches transcend the two-dimensional realm, branching out into the gallery’s own space, a carefully orchestrated and immersive presence, standing as ghostly mementos that silently bear witness to the past.
Vassoyan’s exploration of destruction and reconstruction finds further resonance within the captivating resin sculptures that grace the gallery’s expanse. It took two months of work, in collaboration with Karim Bekdache. The sculptures meld animal visages with human forms and vice versa, blurring the confines of species and gender. This intertwining symbolizes the intricate interdependence of all life forms, an ode to the delicate equilibrium between the human domain and the natural world.
The exhibition is a poignant testament to the innate beauty borne of shattered fragments. Amidst the tumultuous narrative that unfolds within this exhibition, an undercurrent of resilience and optimism thrums. Vassoyan’s exploration of destruction and the subsequent dance of reconstruction is not a mere dispassionate observation of worldly trials, it is a celebration, a hymn to the human spirit’s remarkable capacity to rise from the ashes, forging anew with unwavering determination.
